2020 NURSE OF THE YEAR CATEGORIES AND DESCRIPTION
1. ACADEMIC EDUCATOR: An educator in a university/college/school of nursing
2. ADVANCED PRACTICE: Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Nurse Midwife, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Anesthetist.
3. AMBULATORY /CLINIC CARE: Nurses in any adult or pediatric Ambulatory /Clinic Care settings and/or School, Transplant Coordinators, Parish and Prison Nursing.
4. BEHAVIORAL HEALTH: Nurses in mental / behavioral health or addictive counseling and treatment services.
5. CASE MANAGEMENT/CARE COORDINATION: Nurses actively engaged in the professional practice of case management and utilization review in any health care setting. Nurses who coordinate care and/or advocate for patients/families within or across the continuum of care.
6. CLINICAL EDUCATOR: A nurse educator in a clinical facility.
7. CRITICAL CARE: Nurses in adult and pediatric ICU/CCU, settings.
8. FAMILY NOMINATED: A nurse in any discipline that is being nominated by a current or former patient or their family member.
9. EMERGENCY/TRANSPORT: Nurses in adult and pediatric ER settings including life flight, ambulance, pre-hospital, hospital, telephone triage.
10. INTERMEDIATE CARE/TELEMETRY: Nurses in Intermediate Care Units including step-down, progressive care and telemetry nursing
11. LONG-TERM CARE/POST ACUTE: Nurses caring for patients in specialty Long Term Acute Care Hospitals, Skilled Nursing Facilities and Acute Rehabilitation Facilities.
12. MEDICAL/SURGICAL: Nurses in Medical, Surgical, Orthopedics, Neurological, Renal, Respiratory, Cardiovascular Nursing.
13. NURSE LEADER: Nurse Leaders who have operational responsibility for a clinic, department or service line. Includes various titles such as nurse manager, nurse director or service line leaders.
14. ONCOLOGY: Nurses in adult and pediatric oncology settings.
15. PEDIATRICS/NEONATOLOGY: Nurses in Newborn Nursery, General Pediatric Units, Pediatric Clinics, or any Neonatology settings.
16. PUBLIC/COMMUNITY/HOME HEALTH AND HOSPICE/PALLIATIVE CARE: Nurses in Public/Community Health settings or agencies, inpatient/outpatient hospice and palliative care settings and all home health care settings.
17. QUALITY AND RISK MANAGEMENT/INFORMATICS: Nurses working in Infection Control, Performance Improvement, Quality Management, Risk Management, Patient Advocate, Patient Safety in the Community and/or Hospital. Nurses actively engaged to driving strategies to Integrate Nursing Science, Computer Science, Information Science, and evidence based practices and new knowledge in nursing practice.
18. RISING STAR: Nurses who are within the first two years of practice and provide outstanding patient care, leadership and professionalism.
19. RURAL HEALTH/ CRITICAL ACCESS: Nurses in all Rural Heath or Critical Access settings across all care categories. Includes facilities with less than 100 beds.
20. STUDENT: A student in a nursing program for at least one (1) year who has maintained a record of academic excellence.
21. SURGICAL SERVICES/PROCEDURAL CARE: Nurses in adult or pediatric Perioperative, Preoperative, PACU, Day Surgery and OR. Includes Interventional Radiology, Cardiac Cath Lab, Electrophysiology Lab, Dialysis, Endoscopy and other special procedures.
22. WOMEN’S HEALTH: Nurses in Antepartum, Labor & Delivery, Maternal/Baby Care, Postpartum and Gynecology.
NURSES IN A VARIETY OF POSITIONS (e.g., CHARGE NURSE, COORDINATOR, STAFF NURSE, NURSE SUPERVISOR) COULD BE NOMINATED FOR ANY CATEGORY. NURSES IN ROLES SUCH AS VICE PRESIDENT, COO, CEO OR CNO ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION.
